Multi Point Gas Installation Cape Town

Home Multi Point Gas Installation

A multi point gas installation runs one LPG supply to several appliances instead of giving each its own cylinder. A hob in the kitchen, a geyser on the outside wall, a fireplace in the lounge and a braai on the patio, all fed from one cylinder bank through a branched line.

It is the arrangement most Cape Town homes end up wanting, and it is considerably cheaper to build in one go than to arrive at over four separate visits.

List every appliance you might eventually want, not just the one you are buying now.

Sizing Is the Whole Job

The engineering question in a multi point installation is not how many appliances there are, it is how many will draw at once and what that does to pressure at the furthest point. A geyser firing while the hob is on full and the fireplace is lit is the design case, and a line sized for the average will produce a hob that drops to a weak flame the moment somebody runs a bath.

  • Total connected demand is added up and the spine sized for realistic simultaneous draw
  • Branch diameters step down as they leave the spine
  • The furthest appliance is the one to check, because pressure drop accumulates over distance
  • Each appliance gets its own isolation valve so one can be serviced without shutting the house
  • Cylinder count is set by peak draw, not just by how often you want to refill

If you are told a four-appliance house can run on a single 9kg cylinder, get a second opinion. That is the most common undersizing error in domestic gas.

Excludes the appliances themselves and any making good after chasing. A double-storey route or a long run to an outdoor braai area adds materially.

Phasing It

You do not have to buy every appliance at once, and most people do not. What you should do at once is size the cylinder bank and the spine line for the finished system, and rough in capped points wherever an appliance might land. A capped point costs a few hundred rand during the main install. Retrofitting the same point into a finished, tiled, painted house costs thousands.

Every capped point still has to appear on the certificate, so tell the installer where they are even if nothing is connected.

Certification

One certificate of conformity covers the installation, listing the appliances and points on it. Every time an appliance is added, moved or removed, the installation is altered and a new certificate is issued. That is covered on Gas Certificate of Compliance Cape Town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one LPG supply serve several appliances?

Yes, and it is the normal arrangement in a house with more than one gas appliance. The supply and the pipework have to be sized for the appliances drawing simultaneously, which is the part that gets underestimated.

How much does a multi point gas installation cost in Cape Town?

A hob and geyser on one supply typically runs R12,000 to R26,000, and a four-appliance system with a fireplace and braai R22,000 to R45,000, excluding the appliances. These are indicative ranges rather than quotations.

What happens if the system is undersized?

Symptoms show up under simultaneous load: the hob flame drops when the geyser fires, the geyser struggles to hold temperature, and appliances furthest from the cylinder perform worst. The fix is upsizing the line, which usually means replacing the run.

Can I add a braai point to an existing multi point system later?

Usually yes, if the spine was sized with headroom. Adding a branch and an isolation valve to a system with capacity runs R3,500 to R9,000. If there is no headroom, the spine has to be upsized first.

How many cylinders does a multi point installation need?

Most Cape Town houses with a hob and geyser run two 48kg cylinders on automatic changeover. Add a fireplace used through winter and four becomes reasonable. The count is driven by peak draw and by how often you are willing to arrange a swap.

Is one certificate enough for the whole system?

Yes. One certificate of conformity covers the installation and the points on it. It is reissued whenever the installation is altered.

Multi point systems are quoted through Gas Installers Cape Town, where several installers price the same appliance list and you can see who has sized it properly.
